K Street Walking Tour

Join us March 30, 2011, for a FREE walking tour of the 700 and 800 blocks of K Street!

Over seven years ago the City hosted a design charrette to create a vision for J and L Street between 7th and 13th streets. The JKL Corridor visioning process recommended strategic attention be given to key development opportunity sites within the K Street corridor, including the idea of bringing a significant amount of retail, housing, and commercial uses to the 700 and 800 blocks of K Street.

Around three years ago the City’s Redevelopment Agency, in the spirit of acting as a catalyst for development, acquired all properties on the south of the 700 Block of K Street and several properties on the 800 block. Fast-forward to February 2010. Four development teams submitted transformative mixed-use project concepts to the City in a competitive bid process for the opportunity to redevelop three sites along the 700 and 800 blocks of K and L streets.

APA Sac Valley Section YPG invites the Emerging Professional’s Group of the American Society of Landscape Architects Sierra Chapter (ASLA EPG) to come along as we tour K Street and find out who the City selected to develop the 700 and 800 blocks and what types of uses are planned within the projects! Are you curious about the “cars on K initiative”? As part of the tour, you’ll find out what’s up with that as well! And at the end of the tour, stick around and network with your colleagues at the new “mermaid” Dive Bar.

Thank you to all who joined us Thursday evening for EPG’s 1st Annual Legacy Series! Our guest panel was incredible and due to the nature of their diverse career paths within the field of landscape architecture, the conversation was unique, inspiring and insightful. We had a wonderful turnout of students, emerging professionals, professionals, as well as members from other ‘emerging groups’ in the industry. Natural Art Installation Brainstorm Meeting

CALLING ALL CREATIVES!

Join the Emerging Professional’s Group at Hot Italian on Thursday, March 18^th from 6-8pm to brainstorm the temporary, natural art piece we will be installing – inspired by last month’s Andy Goldsworthy documentary showing! The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the potential natural materials and location options for an art piece we will design and install. Get involved with this fun and creative activity!

Our last event was a showing of the Andy Goldsworthy documentary ‘Rivers and Tides’ – complete with popcorn and wine! Thank you to all who joined us! After the showing, we had a wonderful discussion about how his work inspired us. Many were intrigued by his purposeful approach to change – each piece is seen as a ‘gift’ to nature and becomes something even more beautiful once nature ‘destroys’ it or changes it (emerging tides, sun casting a glow over the piece, etc.).

Our next step is to meet up on Thursday, March 18th at Hot Italian from 6-8pm to discuss the piece of temporary ‘land art’ we will design and install – inspired by Goldsworthy’s technique and approach. Join in the fun!

join your fellow students and emerging professionals in landscape architecture to celebrate the art of Andy Goldsworthy- British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist know for creating site-specific and time-sensitive pieces of ‘land art’ situated in natural and urban settings. His art involves the use of natural and found objects to create both temporary and permanent sculptures which draw out the character of their environment.

After viewing the film, we will meet up again in March to brainstorm a temporary piece of ‘land art’ we will design and install ourselves!

ASLA EPG Announces our first Kick-Off Event: Township 9 Presentation and Social Mixer at Shady Lady Saloon!

Due to the poor weather expected for Saturday, we have adjusted our event:

Join us at the AIA/ASLA Office (1400 S Street) for an informative presentation of the Township 9: an incredible mixed-use, transit-oriented, infill project in Sacramento’s River District. Adam Kringel, ASLA (Jacobs) who assisted with land planning of the project and conceptual site design of streets, parks, plazas and other urban public spaces, will be giving the presentation.

After the presentation, we’ll link up at nearby Shady Lady Saloon (1409 R Street) for a happy hour social mixer!
